Here we have an extremely rare
Bennington Toby snuff jar with its original lid. Dating from 1849 to 1858, this Toby snuff jar
is very rarely found, especially with its original lid. This is decorated with the Rockingham glaze accenting
the finely molded details in this seated Toby. Toby is always shown as a jovial gentleman holding a tankard of ale in
one hand and his pipe in the other. His round hat is turned up on one side with
a tied ribbon around the crown. This
Toby jar is illustrated in Richard Carter Barrett’s, “Bennington Pottery and
Porcelain” on page 320. Toby measures
4 ½” to the top of his hat by 4” across the base. This Toby survives in its original mint
condition with no damage or repairs. This
Toby snuff jar is extremely rare with its lid, is highly sought after by
advanced collectors and would be prized in any condition.
